“International Symposium for Restorative Justice and Peace Building in Colombia ”

The International Symposium
In response to a unique historical moment when the Colombian Congress has just passed a new penal code that includes restorative justice principles, a coalition of foundations, NGO's, international and local experts are convening an International Symposium on Restorative Justice and Peace in Colombia which will take place from February 9th to 12th, 2005 in Cali, Colombia at the Universidad Javeriana. Five hundred people are expected to attend. .

Speakers will include international and national experts, grass-root and community organizations advancing social programs in restorative justice and other alternative justice systems, scholars and researchers on issues related to justice and conflict resolution, government officials of sectors related to justice, social protection and law enforcement.

Archbishop and Nobel Peace Laureate Desmond Tutu from South Africa has confirmed his participation at the event. An important group of representatives from the Colombian Congress, academia, international cooperation agencies, and civil society organizations have accepted to participate in the Symposium's Advisory Committee. Both the President of the Republic, Álvaro Uribe, and the First Lady, Lina Moreno de
Uribe, have pledged their support and participation as well as Colombia's High Commissioner for Peace, Dr. Luis Carlos Restrepo. .
The meeting will be organized into plenary, round table and breakout sessions, and will provide comprehensive documentation and broad dissemination of international and national experiences on restorative justice. Draft recommendations to incorporate restorative justice principles in the Colombian justice system will be offered. In
addition, proposals will be presented for introducing concepts of restorative justice into the curriculum of law and political sciences schools of Colombia.
